Alibaba Cloud says modular AI data centers can be delivered in 100 days

A warehouse full of GPUs is still a warehouse full of GPUs if the building around them is not ready. Alibaba Cloud says it has cut the delivery time for large-scale AIDC facilities — AI data centers — to 100 days, using a fully modular design that brings factory-built components to the construction site for rapid assembly.

The change is less about a new chip than a new way to build. Traditional data centers are assembled largely in sequence: civil engineering, mechanical and electrical systems, power supply and cooling follow one another on site. Alibaba Cloud’s modular approach standardizes and pre-assembles different parts in factories, allowing work that once waited in line to happen in parallel.

The company says the speed gain has not come with a higher bill. Construction costs are reported to be more than 10% lower than for the previous generation of its data centers. Alibaba Cloud describes the result as a shift from custom facilities toward infrastructure that can be manufactured, transported and replicated across locations.

The pressure comes from the rapid growth of AI computing demand. Chips can be purchased and servers assembled, but they still need power, cooling and networking inside an operating data center. If construction falls behind hardware deployment, GPUs already bought by cloud providers may sit idle, turning building speed into a direct competitive advantage.

So what changes, concretely? For Alibaba Cloud, a modular facility could make it easier to reproduce and expand data center capacity across global markets. The company plans to more than double its global modular data center production capacity in 2026.
