Take the new Fairphone Gen 6+ apart, then put it back together. The Dutch smartphone maker has just entered the US market with a $650 phone designed around longevity and easy repairability.

The timing reflects a hardware problem that software updates cannot solve. Google, Samsung, and Apple support phones with updates for the better part of a decade, but Fairphone points to the unresolved question beneath that promise: will the physical device last as long as the software? When a conventional phone needs repair, its owner may be out of luck or facing a large bill.

The physical contrast is deliberate. Standard phones often arrive as glass-and-aluminum sandwiches held together with glue, gaskets, and tiny screws. Fairphone accepts trade-offs against that formula to prioritize a self-repair experience—the ability to open the device, work on it, and reassemble it.

Fairphone CTO Chandler Hatton told Ars Technica that the company’s goal is to offer a compelling mobile experience while letting users “fully own” the device. That is a design objective, not a durability result: the account gives no hardware-lifespan figure and does not establish how long the Gen 6+ will last in everyday use.

So, concretely, the Gen 6+ gives US buyers another way to think about phone ownership now: choose easier access to the hardware, with the associated design compromises, instead of accepting that a broken phone may be difficult or expensive to fix. The benefit is clearest for buyers willing to trade conventional construction for a stronger self-repair option.
