Heart Aerospace's all-electric X1 completes maiden flight

A 25,000-lb (11,340-kg) aircraft rose into the sky over Plattsburgh, New York, on August 12, 2026. Heart Aerospace's X1 demonstrator flew for 27 minutes in an FAA flight test, completing taxiing, takeoff, climb, maneuvering and landing before touching down again.

The flight makes the X1 the world's largest all-electric airplane to complete a maiden flight, according to New Atlas. Its 106-ft (32-m) wingspan puts it in the same broad size class as conventional regional turboprops. That is the point: electric aircraft have flown for more than half a century, but moving from small craft to commercial-aircraft scale has remained difficult.

The obstacle is packed inside the wings and fuselage. Batteries store less energy by weight than aircraft fuel, and they do not become lighter as a flight progresses. The X1 therefore carries a lower takeoff weight than a 43,000-lb (19,500-kg) De Havilland Canada Dash 8-Q300, while also accepting lower speed and operational range.

Heart is using the demonstrator as a precursor to the hybrid-electric, 30-seat ES-30. The company says that production model could deliver operating costs 40% lower than conventional regional aircraft. The X1 flight also supports FAA certification work: it operated under a Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental Category.

So what changes in practice? Not commercial service yet. It shows that Heart can build and fly an all-electric aircraft at a scale comparable to a regional airliner, while exposing the limits that still separate a demonstrator from an economical passenger aircraft. The next promise is the ES-30, whose lower operating costs could support more affordable and frequent regional air service, but the X1 itself remains a prototype.
