Insta360 X6 makes 360 cameras more like everyday Vlog cams

On a bright 36-degree day in Guangzhou, ifanr held the Insta360 X6 outdoors, and its 2.32-inch OLED screen still provided a clear preview. After more than half a month of use, this panoramic camera from Insta360 revealed a clear shift: it is no longer designed solely around extreme sports such as skiing and cycling, but is instead trying to become an everyday Vlog camera that anyone can pick up and use.

The changes start with how it feels in the hand. Insta360 shortened and widened the X6, replacing its physical buttons with pressure-sensitive touch areas to bring the grip’s center of gravity back toward the palm. Its dual 1/1.1-inch square sensors improve the use of the available light-gathering area while also allowing a more compact internal layout. The camera supports replaceable lens covers, offers 20-meter waterproofing without a housing, and comes with a foldable charging selfie stick that makes its operation more like that of a handheld gimbal camera.

What truly changes shooting habits is “shoot first, frame later.” Conventional phones and Vlog cameras generally require the person filming to aim at the subject first and avoid letting people leave the frame while recording. The X6’s 360° mode instead records the surrounding scene first, then retrieves footage from different directions within the panoramic material. The joystick does not drive a mechanical structure; it simply switches viewpoints within the footage. This means there is no mechanical operating noise, while 360-degree tracking and follow mode are still possible.

This workflow allows the same footage to become different shots: a wide-angle landscape, a Vlog frame or even a tiny-planet effect can all be selected during post-production. Gimbal Mode 2.0 automatically tracks subjects such as people and pets, directly outputting a stabilized 4K 30fps video while fully retaining the original 8K 30fps panoramic footage. If the framing of the direct output is not ideal, users can still return to the original and crop it again. The new sensors also improve noise control and dynamic range in twilight and low-light environments—precisely the everyday situations that have traditionally been difficult for 360 cameras.

Specifically, the X6 makes recording during travel, gatherings with friends, hiking and fishing less dependent on the shooter’s real-time judgment: users can spend less time watching the screen and more time paying attention to the scene, while still having room to fix footage if a subject is missed or the framing is off. The cost is equally clear: panoramic footage takes up more storage, and organizing it afterward takes time.
