The sharpest signal in China’s car market is a split: new energy vehicle retail sales fell to 951,000 units in July, yet their share reached a record 65.1%. The result extends a seven-month streak of year-on-year declines for NEV retail sales, but it also shows how quickly gasoline cars are losing ground.

The reason is less a surge across every electric category than the sharper decline in conventional vehicles. Retail sales of internal-combustion passenger cars fell 41% year on year in July, including a 44% drop for pure gasoline vehicles. Overall passenger-vehicle retail sales fell 20.9% to 1.461 million units, according to China’s Passenger Car Association, or CPCA.

Battery-electric vehicles remained the market’s strongest pillar. Their retail sales reached 647,000 units, up 6.0% year on year, while plug-in hybrids fell 21.1% to 219,000 units and extended-range electric vehicles fell 16.5% to 85,000 units. Higher running costs are adding pressure to gasoline cars: the CPCA said domestic gasoline prices rose by 1,575 yuan ($232) per ton in 2026, amid higher international oil prices linked to shipping disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz.

Exports rose sharply. NEV exports reached 540,000 units in July, up 147.8% year on year and accounting for 58.8% of China’s passenger-vehicle exports. Total passenger-vehicle exports rose 87.8% to 918,000 units, showing that Chinese electric-car production is finding new buyers beyond its home market.

So what, concretely? For Chinese consumers, electric vehicles already represented nearly two out of every three passenger cars sold at retail in July, while gasoline models faced shrinking demand and higher operating costs. For manufacturers, the picture is more uneven: BYD led domestic NEV retail sales with 223,461 units, but the wider market is still contracting. The CPCA expects the decline to narrow in August as consumption-support policies take effect and the comparison base becomes more favorable.
