Quest 1 bootloader enables full root access without Meta services
Plug an original Quest into a PC, open a browser, and the headset can now be taken through a streamlined bootloader process without downloading files. QuestStack, a project built around vulnerabilities in the device's Android fastboot process, gives developers and enthusiasts full root access to the Quest 1, Ars Technica reports.
The mechanism is a privilege-escalation chain: several weaknesses in the headset's low-level startup process are combined until the user can gain root, the highest level of control over the device. QuestStack packages that chain into a web-based process, replacing a more involved sequence with a route that begins when the headset is connected to a computer.
The timing matters. Meta, then called Oculus, promoted the original Quest in 2019, then officially stopped supporting the wireless headset in 2023 as it concentrated on the Quest 2 and Quest 3. The hardware did not disappear, but its usefulness increasingly depended on Meta's software and online services.
With QuestStack, owners should be able to sideload applications without registering for a Meta Developer account or turning on Developer Mode through Meta's mobile app. They may also be able to complete the initial setup and login process on a fresh headset even if Meta later shuts down the servers that currently handle it.
And so, concretely? Developers and enthusiasts get a way to keep experimenting with Quest 1 hardware after its manufacturer's support window has closed, while owners of unused headsets could retain a path to setup and independent applications. The project is limited to the original Quest, and the reported capability is an exploit and bootloader release—not a return to official updates, services, or support from Meta.
