The phone sits on the table with a battery more often associated with a power bank than a mainstream handset: 9,210mAh inside Xiaomi’s new Redmi Note 17 Pro Max. The company says it can deliver up to three days of use, or 37 hours of continuous video playback. The model is headed to Europe, Australia, Latin America, and other global markets at the local equivalent of $499, but not the US.

That capacity does not come simply from making the phone larger. Xiaomi uses a silicon-carbon battery with 16 percent silicon, which it says makes the cell more energy-dense than most. The result is a phone broadly the same size as an iPhone 17 Pro Max, but 8g lighter and fractionally thinner. In some other markets, Xiaomi will fit an even larger 10,000mAh single-cell battery.

Charging is the other half of the endurance story. The phone’s 100W wired charging should take just over an hour to reach full capacity, Xiaomi says, while 20 minutes should provide about a day’s worth of power. The company also says the battery will retain 80 percent capacity after 1,600 charging cycles, an estimate it maps to around six years of use. Silicon-carbon cells still come with longevity concerns, and The Verge had not independently tested the battery claims.

For buyers, the practical change is fewer charging stops without moving to a larger, heavier phone. The compromise is elsewhere: the Redmi uses a basic Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 chipset, while its cameras include a 50-megapixel main sensor, an 8-megapixel ultrawide, and a 32-megapixel selfie camera. It runs Android 16 and comes with Xiaomi’s promised “6-year like-new software experience,” though the number of Android version updates is not confirmed. The wider Redmi Note 17 range follows the same endurance-first approach: even the $249 4G-only Note 17 has a 7,700mAh battery.
