Hydrogen unit charges a battery-electric ship at Tilbury
On the Thames, a floating platform beside the Port of Tilbury carried hydrogen equipment, five Ballard fuel cells and a charger. GeoPura used the setup to deliver 300 kW to a commercial electric vessel. The ship was not hydrogen-powered: its battery received electricity made from hydrogen.
The scene captures a genuine port constraint. A berth can need several hundred kilowatts or several megawatts for a short window, while the local grid connection cannot supply that instantaneous load. Distribution upgrades take time, and a ship may demand far more power for an hour than the berth needs for the rest of the day.
A stationary battery offers a shorter electrical path. It can charge slowly through a smaller grid connection, then release power quickly when a vessel arrives. Where schedules allow, containerized batteries could also be swapped, separating charging time from the ship's turnaround. GeoPura's hydrogen route instead uses renewable electricity to make hydrogen, stores and moves it, then runs it through a fuel cell before conditioning the electricity for the charger.
That extra loop carries a measurable penalty. GeoPura says roughly 3.1 MWh of electricity fed into electrolysis produces about 1 MWh of usable electricity after conversion through a fuel cell. The equipment may still fit temporary construction sites, events, remote facilities and other locations where grid electricity is genuinely unavailable, replacing diesel generators with a quiet, locally emissions-free option. A port berth already seeking high-power battery charging faces a tougher case.
So what, concretely? The Tilbury demonstration shows a possible way to charge electric ships where the grid cannot yet handle peak demand, but it does not establish a scalable commercial system. That will require repeated customers, high utilization, workable tariffs and evidence of how many vessels use the installation, how many megawatt-hours it supplies and what the delivered electricity costs. The technology is a demonstrator; the next test is whether another port buys one after seeing those numbers.
