Amazon targets nearly 500 US cities for drone delivery by end of 2026

A Prime Air customer does not simply point to a front door. On the first order, the customer selects a delivery spot where people, pets and vehicles can stay clear while the drone lowers its package. Amazon now says that system will reach nearly 500 US cities and towns by the end of 2026, expanding the service’s current footprint by roughly six times.

The next launches include the metropolitan areas of Chicago, Syracuse, Cleveland, Atlanta and Boise, with more communities expected later this year. Prime Air currently operates from 11 locations across seven states, according to Amazon. Its drones carry eligible groceries, electronics, cosmetics, medications and household products: nearly all items weighing 5 pounds or less that fit in a large shoebox. Amazon says deliveries can arrive in as fast as 30 minutes, while most take around 60 minutes after checkout.

The handoff depends on a compact autonomous aircraft making several decisions on its own. Cameras and sensors support navigation, obstacle detection and delivery, while Amazon’s Detect-and-Avoid system continuously monitors the airspace and surrounding environment. The company says the drones do not track individuals or record movements, and that no person watches a live camera feed. Prime Air operates under Federal Aviation Administration Part 135 certification, the framework used by commercial air carriers.

That scale-up comes with visible limits. The drones fly only in daylight and suitable weather; strong winds, heavy rain or snow, and extreme cold can stop operations. Amazon has also faced incidents involving a construction crane in Tolleson, an overhead internet cable in Waco and an apartment building in Richardson. The company is returning to Tolleson despite the 2025 crane collision, while residents in some communities have complained that repeated flights sound like a small helicopter or a leaf blower overhead.

So what changes in practice? For eligible customers inside a Prime Air service area, a small and urgent order could move from checkout to a chosen landing point in minutes without adding another delivery van to the road. The benefit is narrow rather than universal: packages remain light, drop-off space must be clear, and operations depend on weather and neighborhood acceptance. Amazon’s expansion turns drone delivery from a handful of suburban trials into a service that will have to work reliably—and quietly—for many more communities.
