Texas home batteries reach $19 monthly leases

A monthly bill of $19 now buys Texas homeowners access to 39.2 kilowatt-hours of Base Power batteries. Tesla is offering 27 kilowatt-hours of Powerwalls for $35 a month. The change matters because home batteries typically cost more than $10,000 installed, putting them beyond many households unless they already have solar panels and excess electricity to store.

The pricing reflects declining battery costs and the fact that the batteries are not sitting idle behind one house. A virtual power plant, or VPP, uses software to coordinate thousands of household batteries so they behave like a single power station. Operators charge them when electricity rates are low, then draw on them when demand pushes prices higher, selling the stored power back to the grid and returning part of the value through lower prices or cheaper backup equipment.

That distributed design also changes the timetable. Base Power has a deal with CoServ, a North Texas electricity cooperative, to build a 100-megawatt VPP. Tim Pianta, Base Power’s head of utility partnerships, told TechCrunch the company is on pace to install it in under 12 months; a traditional 100-megawatt power plant would take two to four years to come online, he said. Batteries placed near customers can also reduce the need for new power lines and avoid some grid-connection delays.

For homeowners, the concrete trade-off is access without the upfront purchase price, alongside a battery that can provide backup power while also serving the grid. For utilities, VPPs offer another way to cover demand spikes without relying only on “peaker plants,” specialized generators that run during high-demand periods, or paying large energy users to disconnect. VPPs are gaining traction in markets including Texas and California, while Base Power says it installs 8 megawatt-hours of batteries each day and hopes to double that rate by the end of the year.

The limits are visible. The VPP market is valued at $7.4 billion today and Grand View Research expects it to top $30 billion by 2033; that forecast is not a guarantee. The most visible leasing offers are currently for Texas homeowners, and broader adoption will depend on utilities, grid operators and companies assembling enough distributed batteries. Still, as data centers and other electrified loads increase demand, a fleet that can be assembled in months offers a faster option than infrastructure that takes years.
