China prepares Chang'e-7 hopper for lunar shadow

At the bottom of some craters near the Moon’s south pole, sunlight has not reached the ground for billions of years. Temperatures stay below minus 200°C, and China is preparing Chang’e-7 to enter that darkness in search of water ice that could one day be useful.

The mission brings four machines: an orbiter, a lander, a rover and a hopper. The hopper is built to leap over steep crater walls and broken terrain, then descend into places a conventional wheeled vehicle may be unable to reach. China’s Queqiao-2 relay satellite, launched in March 2024, is already in position to support the mission.

The scientific question has changed. Chinese scientists are not trying to establish whether water exists on the Moon; evidence for polar water is already considered compelling. Chang’e-7 will instead examine where the resource is, how deeply it is buried, what form and concentration it has, and whether access is realistic. The landing site remains undecided, though a ridge on or near Shackleton crater in the Aitken region is a leading candidate.

The practical consequence is a better answer to whether lunar ice is merely present or could support future activity. Chang’e-7 is still a planned uncrewed mission, not a working extraction system, and its launch date has become uncertain after a separate Chinese rocket failure. A potential Chang’e-8 launch in 2028 would take the next step by demonstrating how such resources might be used.

The United States is pursuing the same long-term goal through NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services program, which buys delivery and mobility services from private companies. NASA currently has 17 contracted deliveries carrying more than 60 instruments. Intuitive Machines’ IM-2 mission, Athena, attempted a similar effort with a drill, mass spectrometer and small hopper, but its lander fell over and was powered down one day after arrival. The south pole leaves both national programs with the same darkness, cold and communications challenges.
