Europe’s Renewables Could Push Methane Demand Into Structural Decline
Every summer, Europe has treated gas storage as insurance: fill the tanks before winter, then draw them down when demand rises. That habit is beginning to look less central. Wind and solar now supply Europe with more electricity than methane-fired generating stations, and Reuters reports that renewable output has matched or exceeded gas generation for extended periods across 2025 and 2026.
The shift is visible in the fleet itself, not only in favorable weather. Over the past quarter century, Europe’s gas-fired generating capacity grew from 250 gigawatts to around 400 GW. Wind and solar capacity rose from under 20 GW to nearly 750 GW. Europe now has nearly twice as much installed wind and solar capacity as gas-fired capacity, giving renewables a much larger footprint in the electricity system.
That changes the calendar of power generation. Gas historically eased in spring and summer before returning as winter demand climbed. Now wind and solar are increasingly dominating the period from April through October, while utilities have reduced coal and gas-fired generation to multi-year lows in 2026 as combined renewable output reached record highs. Once enough renewable capacity is installed, Reuters says, declining fossil generation becomes less a policy ambition than a mathematical consequence.
So what, concretely? If gas demand from power plants keeps shrinking, Europe may not need to store as much gas each summer or withdraw as much during winter. The central question can move from “Does Europe have enough gas?” to “How much gas does Europe actually need?” That could reduce exposure to supply disruptions and price shocks, even as the continent continues to depend heavily on imported gas.
The dependency has not disappeared; it has changed shape. Europe still imports almost 90 percent of the gas it consumes, and LNG—particularly from the United States—has taken a larger role. The United States supplied 58 percent of total LNG imports in Europe in 2025. Gas may have been described for years as a bridge between coal and renewables, but Europe’s expanding wind and solar fleet is making that bridge shorter.
