Penn State models underground terrain with thunder

When thunder rolls over Penn State, part of its energy can travel into the ground. A team of scientists there has used thunderstorm-driven seismic waves and fiber-optic cabling to reconstruct the terrain beneath the local campus, according to Ars Technica.

The signal is called a “thunderquake.” It is not an earthquake in the usual sense, but energy from thunder entering the Earth's upper crust. Seismic waves move at different speeds depending on the material they cross: solid or semi-molten rock, fractured or intact ground, and areas containing different amounts of water. Those changes let scientists infer what lies below the surface.

Thunder offers a possible middle path between two established ways of generating seismic data: waiting for a natural earthquake or deliberately creating waves with explosives. But thunderquakes are difficult to read because their seismic signals are extremely complex. Penn State's contribution is a model intended to make that complexity interpretable, then turn it into an image of the subsurface.

So what changes in practice? If the approach holds up beyond the campus reconstruction, researchers could have another way to image a chosen area without waiting for an earthquake or triggering their own seismic event.
