Ride1Up launches Portola 02 folding e-bike from $895

A folding e-bike is often lifted before it is ridden. Electrek’s tester spent the first days with Ride1Up’s new Portola 02 moving it through that practical test, after the company launched the second-generation model at $895. The bike keeps the original formula— a 750W motor, 20×3″ wheels and assistance up to 28 mph/45 km/h in the Class 3 category—while changing how that power reaches the rider.

The main update is Ride1Up’s Intui-Drive pedal assist. It combines cadence sensing, which detects whether the pedals are turning, with torque sensing, which responds to how hard the rider is pushing. In Electrek’s early rides, that made the Portola 02 feel more natural and responsive, particularly when pulling away from a stop or controlling effort at lower speeds. The tester stressed that a couple of days on an early production example is not a full review.

Ride1Up now offers two battery sizes and two frame approaches. The 10Ah LG battery brings the Portola Lite down to 52 lb (23.6 kg), while the 15Ah version weighs 59 lb (26.7 kg). The larger battery adds 50% more range for $100, taking the starting price to $995; the most equipped model, with an integrated rack and 15Ah battery, costs $1,095. Ride1Up says the bigger battery can provide up to 60 miles (96 km) in pedal assist, with lower figures expected when using the throttle.

That trade-off matters most when the bike has to be carried, stored in a car trunk or maneuvered up stairs. The Portola 02 can also be configured with or without a welded-on rear rack, while a heavy-duty removable rack is available for riders who need more cargo capacity. New equipment includes a large color display, an updated battery management system and built-in Find My tracking, which adds a way to locate the bike but does not replace a good lock.

So, concretely, the Portola 02 gives commuters and apartment dwellers a choice between carrying less weight and carrying more range, without giving up the compact utility-bike format. Its 20×3″ tires remain a middle ground that Electrek’s tester found suitable for city riding and gravel paths, rather than as bulky as 4″ fat tires. The limits are clear: the range figure comes from Ride1Up, the test was brief, and the bike uses a basic Shimano Altus derailleur. Still, the launch turns a single compromise-heavy model into a more adjustable folding e-bike lineup.
