Suzuki’s e-SKY BEV targets 310 km in Japan this autumn
A small electric car is about to take a very Japanese shape. Suzuki has unveiled the e-SKY, its first battery-electric passenger kei car, and plans to launch it in Japan in autumn 2026 with a 310-km reference range. The car is designed for commuting, school trips, shopping and family transport rather than long-distance driving.
The e-SKY keeps the compact footprint of the Vision e-Sky concept shown in Tokyo in 2025: 3,395 millimeters long, 1,475 mm wide and 1,625 mm high, with a 2,460-mm wheelbase. Its battery holds 26 kilowatt-hours, and the prototype’s curb weight is about 1,030 kilograms. Suzuki has worked on the underbody and other aerodynamic details while retaining the tall proportions of a kei car, whose dimensions and power output are tightly limited in Japan.
That constraint shapes the engineering. The e-SKY uses Suzuki’s HEARTECT-e electric-vehicle architecture, with an integrated e-Axle combining the motor, inverter and reduction gears. The battery sits beneath the floor. Suzuki says the prototype can accept up to 50 kW of direct-current fast charging, reaching 80% in about 25 minutes; alternating-current charging takes approximately 4.5 hours at 6 kW or about eight hours at 3 kW.
For drivers, the practical change is a smaller battery aimed at ordinary daily journeys, not an oversized reserve for highway travel. The car can also provide electricity through a 100-volt, 1,500-watt outlet, while its heat-pump climate-control system is intended to reduce the energy used for heating and cooling. Suzuki is entering a segment that already includes Nissan’s Sakura, Mitsubishi’s eK X EV, Honda’s N-ONE e: and BYD’s Racco.
The boundaries are clear. The 310-km range is a reference figure that has not yet been certified under Japan’s WLTC testing cycle, and Suzuki has not announced pricing or final production specifications. The company’s figures describe a prototype and a planned launch, not yet a car in service; the case for the e-SKY will rest on whether this compact formula reaches production with its stated efficiency and everyday usability intact.
