Wenchang factory set for trials, targeting 1,000 satellites a year
At Wenchang, satellites are set to make a short final journey: from a production line next to the launch site to a rocket. The factory passed expert acceptance in June and is set to begin trial production with a designed annual capacity of 1,000 satellites.
The scale answers a hard arithmetic problem in orbit. China has planned the Qianfan and national Guowang constellations, together totalling about 28,000 satellites to be completed by 2035. China put roughly 350 satellites into orbit in 2025; at that pace, the two networks would take 80 years to complete, according to Pandaily. The window for usable orbital slots, however, is slowly closing.
Traditional satellite production is an “island” model: specialists work around a fixed station and build each spacecraft individually. That process takes 1.5 to 5 years and costs tens of millions of dollars per unit, making it poorly suited to constellations numbering in the thousands. Wenchang instead links the factory, a testing centre and eight component makers in a “1+1+8” campus system.
The result is a shorter production loop. Whole-satellite assembly has been compressed from a week to a day, with the fastest build taking half a day. Because the site sits beside the launch base, satellites can move directly from manufacturing to a rocket, avoiding thousands of kilometres of transport and the need for re-testing described by Pandaily. Other Chinese manufacturers are also pursuing scale: GeeSpace has reported a 28-day delivery time and a 45% cost reduction, while MinoSpace has capacity of more than 150 satellites a year.
So what changes, concretely? For the teams building China’s planned constellations, Wenchang could turn satellite manufacturing from a one-off engineering sequence into a repeatable factory process, while cutting the distance between assembly and launch. It does not yet prove a sustained output of 1,000 satellites: trial production is only beginning, and the source gives no launch schedule or customer timetable. The factory is therefore a production experiment aimed at meeting a clock set by orbital availability and competition from SpaceX, not an operating constellation in service.
