Crypto sprint identifies suspects in 125 countries

At the National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance in New York, investigators worked through crypto trails linked to child sexual abuse material, or CSAM. The multi-day Operation Lighthouse sprint produced 14,300 investigative leads and identified suspects in 125 countries, according to Chainalysis.

The team investigated 29,120 cryptocurrency addresses and digital identifiers and targeted more than 100 CSAM platforms, forums and distribution networks across the surface web and dark web. At least nine law enforcement agencies, at least 13 private-sector partners and specialized nonprofits took part, turning a shared pool of intelligence into priority cases rather than leaving each organization to work alone.

The mechanism links blockchain transactions, which leave a visible record, with information from exchanges, payment services and other partners. Chainalysis says that process helped private-sector participants identify 7,700+ suspect accounts, including 16 registered sex offenders, across cryptocurrency exchanges and payment services.

So what does it change, concretely? For investigators, it compresses the path from a suspicious crypto address to an actionable lead and gives agencies in different countries a common set of targets. For companies and nonprofits, it creates a channel to contribute intelligence to disruptions involving consumers, vendors, marketplace operators and administrators. It does not eliminate the abuse: Chainalysis says cryptocurrency is used in only a small fraction of CSAM-related activity, and its figures describe the sprint rather than completed prosecutions.

Operation Lighthouse was hosted by the NCFTA and brought together participants from law enforcement, industry and civil society. Europol, Binance, Coinbase and the Internet Watch Foundation were among the organizations cited as contributors. Chainalysis presents the sprint as a repeatable model; Chainalysis reports these numbers as the results of the sprint.
