Comcast turns millions of routers into motion sensors

A router that normally sits unnoticed in the living room is now watching for movement. Comcast has rolled out Wi-Fi Motion to millions of newer Xfinity gateways, turning the equipment already installed in customers’ homes into opt-in motion sensors at no extra cost.

The mechanism is simple to describe. Wi-Fi Motion detects disruptions in the signal between an Xfinity gateway and connected devices when people or objects move through the space, then sends an alert through the Xfinity app. It does not use cameras or record images and video. Comcast says the system is designed to detect motion, not identify specific people or track the precise location of movement.

The feature works on XB7 and newer gateways. Customers can activate or disable it in the app and choose Home Watch, Away Watch, or Dark Watch, a night and sleep mode. Comcast says users can select up to three connected devices, ideally placed in fixed positions so the Wi-Fi paths cover areas such as an entrance or living room. The company’s Kohposh Kuda told The Verge that Comcast spent three years refining the algorithms, while acknowledging that the product provides only a basic level of security and does not yet replace cameras or physical motion sensors.

The privacy question is less abstract than the technology. TechCrunch reported that Comcast’s support terms allow it to disclose information generated by Wi-Fi Motion to outside parties in connection with a law-enforcement investigation, a dispute to which Comcast is a party, or a court order or subpoena, without further notice. That clause has already prompted public concern, including from a customer considering replacing a leased gateway.

So what changes in practice? A household with a compatible router can get a movement alert without purchasing extra hardware, which may make a basic security check easier to add—and could support future uses such as helping people age in place. Customers who want cameras, cloud video storage, a door or window sensor, and 24/7 urgent response can instead choose Xfinity Shield Select for $15 a month. The free sensor is available now; the privacy terms remain part of the decision to turn it on.
