On Mars, the air is thin, and every rotor blade has to be designed for it. Ingenuity, NASA's small helicopter, made the first powered flight on another planet, and its rounded blades were built for that job. A team at NASA's Ames Research Center in California's Silicon Valley, working with Imperial College London in the United Kingdom and Nagoya University in Japan, is now reshaping the blade for the flyers that come next.
The new design, called roamx-0201, is thinner and asymmetrical in cross-section, compared with the rounded profile of Ingenuity's blades. Researchers used high-fidelity computer simulations and algorithms tuned to Mars conditions to reach that shape, then tested it in wind tunnels. The blade also works differently: its leading edge intentionally disrupts the thin layer of air that clings to the surface, a disturbance that, counterintuitively, pulls the blade upward and helps lift the helicopter more effectively than earlier designs.
Two problems that limit rotorcraft are at the center of the work. On Mars, the speed of sound is lower than on Earth, and performance can drop suddenly, a phenomenon called drag divergence, when the rotors approach it. The roamx-0201 blade was able to run longer at higher speeds before that happened. It also tackles stall, the sudden loss of performance and stability when the angle of airflow changes. Ingenuity's blades degraded steeply at stall; under the conditions studied, the new design performed significantly better. In simulations, the redesigned blades could extend a single uninterrupted flight from 0.7 kilometers to as much as 18.7 kilometers while carrying scientific instruments. The findings were published on Sept. 22 in the journal of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
These are not yet flight-ready results. The figures come from simulations and wind tunnel tests, and NASA says the technology is not yet ready for Mars. Engineers are still working to explain and close the gaps between computational predictions and real-world performance, which is precisely why the tests matter.
For future Mars missions, the stakes are concrete. Helicopters fitted with such blades could fly farther, carry heavier scientific payloads and open new kinds of exploration, beyond the short hops Ingenuity was designed for. The SkyFall mission, due to launch in 2028 with three helicopters, comes first; the sources give no date for the flights that would use roamx-0201.
