Reddit tests AI-narrated videos made from text posts

An eight-year-old discussion in r/boardgames has been given a new soundtrack: AI voices now read its question and selected replies aloud in a three-minute video. The post, which has 101 responses about road-trip games for adults, can still be read as a normal Reddit thread, but a slider at the top now lets users choose “Read” or “Play.”

The generated video highlights each passage as the AI voice speaks. Underneath, Reddit labels the format “Real conversation voiced by AI,” making clear that the voices are synthetic even though the material comes from an existing community discussion.

Reddit is presenting the test as a way to make its forums easier to consume. Someone unfamiliar with threaded discussions may find a narrated sequence simpler than scrolling through nested comments. The same shortcut creates new risks: automated voices can mispronounce names and words, and the system could cite the wrong comment.

The experiment follows Reddit’s stated push toward a more video-oriented experience. CEO Steve Huffman has also pointed to people listening to Reddit content in the background, describing spoken versions of posts as an emerging format that can be engaging. The company says the test is currently live on the web and is set to roll out on iOS and Android Tuesday.

So what changes in practice? Reddit users may soon be able to listen to selected conversations instead of reading them, while newcomers get a more guided way into the platform’s communities. For now, this remains an early, limited experiment: Reddit says it is testing whether people find the format useful and whether it can make the result feel authentic before expanding it to more existing posts.
