A single red dot buried in James Webb Space Telescope datasets has become an astrophysical outlier. Astronomers concluded that the object is a “black hole star”: the size of a large star, yet producing far more energy than nuclear fusion could explain.

The trail began in 2024, when researchers examining Webb data noticed hundreds of mysterious little red dots. They were believed to be baby quasars and existed when the Universe was just a few hundred million years old. One object did not fit any known astrophysical object.

That object was both extremely red and extremely bright. Its properties failed to fit any known astrophysical object, according to the account of the discovery.
