Anthropic to store enterprise monitoring data in customer clouds

For AI systems handling companies’ confidential data, should records be kept or nothing retained? Anthropic has opened a third door. The company announced “Enterprise Frontier Safeguards (EFS),” a system that places monitoring data in the customer’s cloud and leaves post-detection review to the customer. It will be rolled out in phases starting this fall, with the goal of becoming broadly available before the season ends.

The backdrop is 30-day data retention introduced with Claude Fable 5 and later. Anthropic says advanced misuse spans multiple sessions and accounts, making retention for a set period necessary to correlate activity over time. At the same time, companies in regulated industries have said that models with data retention are difficult to use. Anthropic says it has never used enterprise data for training without explicit permission.

Under EFS, monitoring activity data will be stored in the customer’s own Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage or Google Cloud Storage account. An automated monitoring system will analyze communications over a set period under customer-managed encryption keys, access policies and audit logs. If it detects signs of the development of offensive cyber or biological capabilities, or the theft or leakage of credentials, it will send a flag directly to the customer’s security team. Anthropic will receive only the alert’s classification and severity.

In regulated industries, access to legal materials, unpublished information and pharmaceutical safety reports is often tightly restricted. That created demand for reviews to be conducted by the customer’s own personnel rather than Anthropic employees. Customer-owned storage, customer-managed encryption keys and fully automated review are each optional, and do not affect model behavior, API pricing or rate limits. EFS itself is free, but customers will incur cloud charges for storage, reads and writes, and data transfers.

So what changes for companies? Personnel in banking, healthcare and other sectors can use the monitoring system while keeping control of access to confidential data within their own organization. Anthropic says the service will support Claude Code, Claude Enterprise, Claude Platform, Amazon Bedrock, Google’s Agent Platform and Microsoft Foundry, among others, and that it has been designed with more than 100 customers. The initial launch this fall will be an important milestone, but the announcement is still at the pre-launch stage, and it remains to be seen how well detection accuracy and operational burdens hold up in practice.
