In the lab, a blender makes graphene from e-waste

A discarded phone supplied the graphite. A kitchen blender supplied the mechanical force. At Dublin City University, researchers combined those ingredients with tap water and old newspaper to produce thinner carbon sheets called graphene, in a study published in ACS Sustainable Resource Management.

The method is a simplified form of liquid-phase exfoliation. Graphite consists of stacked carbon layers; placing it in liquid and applying mechanical energy can separate those layers. The team then used a kitchen sieve to remove larger pieces that had not broken down properly.

The newspaper solved a second problem. Its cellulose fibers helped keep the separated sheets apart, rather than allowing them to stick back together. Without the newspaper-derived material, the processed carbon settled from the water within minutes. With it, the mixture remained usable for several hours and could be mixed again with a simple shake.

The experiment still has clear limits. Most of the work used commercially available graphite because a single smartphone contains only a small amount, although the researchers dismantled a discarded phone and recovered enough graphite to demonstrate the process on real electronic waste. Advanced laboratory equipment was still needed to verify that graphene had actually been produced, and the researchers are not proposing kitchen blenders as substitutes for industrial factories.

Concretely, the gain is access rather than mass production. Schools, community laboratories and smaller research groups could potentially perform initial processing with inexpensive materials and waste products, then rely on universities or shared facilities for advanced characterization. For early-stage experiments, that lowers the equipment barrier while giving discarded electronics and newspaper a second use.
