For a homeowner in southern Germany, the answer to "can my roof take solar panels?" used to mean days of waiting. Since its automated process went live in late July 2026, Netze BW has received more than 16,000 grid connection requests for small photovoltaic (PV, solar electricity) installations, and more than 5,000 applicants have already received an answer within five minutes. Fast answers only come in some places, though, and the company is still working on the rest.

The pressure comes from the grid itself. Distribution system operators, the companies that run the local power lines, now face a growing stream of requests for rooftop solar and home batteries, and each one has to be checked against the capacity of the network next to it. Netze BW began testing an automated answer in November 2025. The system uses a digital model of the grid that maps power lines, substations and every existing customer connection. It calculates how much capacity is free, checks technical constraints and takes into account the connections already approved. For installations up to 15 kW, the automated response is a binding grid connection approval that names the connection point. Before the change, manually assessed requests at Netze BW took an average of 12 days, while a recent comparison of German operators put the median at 80 days.

The limits are as clear as the gains. The fast track only applies in areas where grid capacity is not considered critical. Where the model finds too little room, the file goes to a staff member, who decides whether the network must be reinforced or whether another connection point is available, a step that can take up to 12 days. PV systems larger than 15 kW still need a manual check of their technical data before any binding offer is issued. Netze BW says 99% of requests are now submitted through its portal, which accepts and processes them around the clock.

"The energy transition cannot be achieved with a single mouse click – but the right digital solutions can certainly speed things up significantly," said Jörg Reichert, chairman of Netze BW's management board. "Anyone wanting to connect a photovoltaic system should be able to reach their goal without paperwork, waiting on hold, or follow-up inquiries." The company's standing was also recognised in a digitalization index published this summer by the Bundesnetzagentur, Germany's energy regulator.

For a household or an installer in one of the areas with spare capacity, the gain is concrete: a yes, with its connection point, in minutes rather than weeks, and no need to chase a file by phone. For the rest, the first step is a clearer answer about where the network is full, and a longer wait. Netze BW plans to extend automation to other connection processes while keeping the grid stable, but the sources give no date or scope for that next stage.
