Volvo EX30 can power devices at up to 3 kW via software update

A coffee maker plugged into a car is no longer a science-fiction prop for Volvo EX30 drivers. Starting this week, Volvo Cars is rolling out an over-the-air software update that lets the electric SUV supply power to external devices through vehicle-to-load, or V2L—using the vehicle’s battery as a power source for equipment outside the car.

The mechanism is simple: a separate adapter connects to the EX30’s charge port, and the appliance plugs into that adapter. Volvo says the system can deliver up to 3 kW at 16 amps, enough for a range of everyday equipment including a laptop, coffee maker, fridge during a power outage or campsite gear.

The car also sets a clear reserve. Once the battery level drops below 20%, V2L automatically cuts off the energy supply to save power. The feature will not be available to drivers in the US, Canada, Mexico, Korea, Taiwan or Japan. In EMEA, APAC and Latin American markets, Volvo says it will use the CCS2 charging standard.

For drivers who receive the update, the change turns the EX30 into more than transport: it can provide electricity away from a socket, whether that means making coffee outdoors, running a laptop or keeping a fridge powered during an outage. The benefit depends on carrying the separate adapter, and the rollout is regional rather than global.

The update also brings a customizable contextual bar and a redesigned settings menu. In certain European markets, Volvo is adding Plug & Charge—the ability to begin public charging without a physical card or extra app—but only on 2026 models or newer. These features are being rolled out through a software update.
