Roland enters generative AI music with Melody Flip
At the start of a music session, a producer can open Roland's Melody Flip inside a digital audio workstation (DAW), the software used to build a track, choose a genre, note density, BPM and key, and generate a melody, chord progression, bassline or drums. The new plug-in is Roland's entry into generative AI music, but its output is a loop, not a finished song.
That distinction separates Melody Flip from Suno and Udio. Those services can produce polished songs with vocals and full arrangements; Roland's tool does not. It offers a smaller building block, and it can also work from a reference track, using its melodic ideas as a starting point.
The system offers around 250 Palettes, themed collections of musical ideas sorted by genre. There is no detailed text prompt: users mainly select the genre, note density, BPM and key, then accept the result. The sounds reinforce that role. They are mostly general MIDI tones reminiscent of '90s video games, rather than finished production instruments.
Concretely, Melody Flip is aimed at the sketching stage. A producer can export the MIDI data—the note information generated by the tool—into a DAW, change it, and combine it with more powerful synthesizer plug-ins. Melody Flip can therefore supply raw material for a track while leaving arrangement, sound design and the rest of the production to the person using it.
The limits are part of the story. The Verge's Terrence O'Brien says the tool's restricted controls and basic sounds make clear that it is not meant to be used out of the box, and notes that the music community's general response to generative AI is unlikely to bring Roland much goodwill. The product arrives alongside recent Roland instruments including the P-6 Creative Sampler, SH-4d, Gaia 2 and TR-1000.
