Bentley’s AI engineering servers win Gold Stevie Award

An engineer types a design request. Instead of stopping at a chatbot’s answer, the instruction can move into Bentley’s software: the company’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers for STAAD.Pro and MicroStation have won a Gold Stevie Award for Technology Breakthrough of the Year in construction and civil engineering technology.

The mechanism is direct. Bentley’s MCP connection lets an AI assistant interpret design intent in natural language, while STAAD.Pro or MicroStation carries out the modeling and analysis. In STAAD.Pro, structural engineers can query models, define load cases, extract analysis results and support design optimization. In MicroStation, the same approach extends to CAD — computer-aided design — and BIM, or building information modeling, workflows.

A recent MicroStation demonstration recreated the parametric geometry of London’s Gherkin tower from a text prompt. That does not mean a complete building design can be safely delegated to an assistant. Bentley’s description keeps the engineer in the loop: users can inspect the AI’s reasoning, adjust the model and validate the design against accuracy, safety and compliance requirements using Bentley’s tools.

The recognition came through the 2026 Stevie Awards for Technology Excellence, where more than 180 technology and business professionals judged nominations through independent scoring. ARC Advisory Group called Bentley’s approach a structured path for applying AI in infrastructure engineering, because assistants coordinate tasks through validated tools while engineers retain approval and final judgment.

So what changes in practice? The useful shift is not simply asking an AI to explain an engineering model. It is giving the assistant a controlled route into the applications where models, loads, analysis results and parametric geometry already live. For engineers, that could make repetitive exploration and model queries easier to initiate in plain language. The announcement does not report independent benchmarks, user numbers or field performance, so the award marks recognition of the workflow rather than proof of its results in live projects.
