A tiny cylinder stands at the center of a new way to harvest heat from evaporation. Researchers at Soochow University built a vertical microrod generator that reached 14.3 W m −2 power density and 21.5% power conversion efficiency, then connected arrays of the devices to emergency lights and a commercial 36 W ceiling lamp.

The obstacle is not a lack of heat. Evaporation draws heat from its surroundings, but that atmospheric thermal energy is diffuse. Earlier generators relied on water carrying ions along charged surfaces, creating a voltage called a streaming potential. In those systems, water often moved slowly and in several directions, allowing much of the absorbed heat to dissipate before it became electricity.

The Soochow team used machine learning to steer the design. Its dataset combined 331 measurements from the researchers’ experiments with 254 measurements from earlier studies. The models tested the effects of the generator’s dimensions, surface charge, salt concentration and ambient temperature. Predictions from the XGBoost model led the team to a microrod diameter of approximately 550 micrometers, designed to create a directional pressure gradient and faster, more focused ion transport.

So what changes in practice? Arrays containing hundreds or thousands of these rods powered an emergency light, a laser flashlight, a smoke alarm monitoring system, an information display and the 36 W lamp. The authors also report that the device retained efficiency over 20% across 30 K ambient temperature span, pointing to a possible route for reliable off-grid power from a low-power-density heat source.

The result is still a research demonstration, not a commercial product. The largest initial demonstrations needed as many as 8,400 microrods. The 30-day test did not establish long-term durability, and future work must reduce the system’s size, simplify production and make large-scale manufacturing practical.
