EcoFlow Stream Ultra X stores 3.84 kWh on a balcony

It takes two handles and a bit of effort to move the 39.2 kg EcoFlow Stream Ultra X. Once in place, however, the balcony solar battery only needs to be plugged in: the panel cables connect at the back, and the device is then connected to a household outlet. Automobile Propre tested it with a capacity of 3.84 kWh, compared with a maximum of 2 kWh when plug-and-play solar batteries first appeared.

The Stream Ultra X accepts up to 2000 W of solar panels, distributed across four 500 W inputs. Each has its own MPPT controller, a system that seeks a panel’s optimal operating point to extract more electricity from it. This separation is useful when the panels do not all face the same direction: part of the installation can therefore produce power without being held back by the others.

The source contains a discrepancy regarding power delivered to the household grid: its main text states 1200 W, with a limit of 900 W when France is selected in the app and a setting that restores 1200 W, while its datasheet lists 800 W AC for the grid output. Its output remains below that of the latest plug-and-play solar batteries, whose threshold is around 2500 W.

So what does that mean in practice? For a small home that mainly uses lighting, computing equipment and a few dishwasher or washing-machine cycles, this capacity can absorb solar surpluses and then feed the electricity back through a standard outlet. In the event of a public-grid outage, the two integrated outlets are rated for a maximum output of 1200 W; the source’s main text presents them as bringing the total output to 2400 W, but the datasheet distinguishes between 800 W for the grid and 1200 W for the backup outlets. Outdoors, however, this solution requires an extension cord.

The trade-off is therefore very tangible: simple installation and 3.84 kWh of storage, but a heavy device and output power that limits the appeal of a large solar installation. Launched in summer 2025, the Stream Ultra X remains suited to a solar-equipped balcony or a small house, rather than a highly energy-intensive home.
