For a year, four people have lived in a 1,700-square-foot habitat at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, behaving as though they were on Mars. Their only contact with their families has been by email, through a delay that mimics the distance to the Red Planet. The habitat itself is 3D-printed, and the mission is called CHAPEA, short for Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog: an Earth-based simulation built to study people in confinement before they are sent farther away.

The crew entered the habitat on Oct. 19, 2025, for a 378-day mission. Its members are Ross Elder, mission commander; Ellen Ellis, medical officer; Matthew Montgomery, science officer; and James Spicer, flight engineer. Over the year they grew crops, managed limited resources, and carried out simulated spacewalks, known as extravehicular activities, on a sandy surface outside the habitat. Those walks involved suited work, including a maintenance task and a geological outing.

The pressure is not only physical. Messages with Earth take up to 45 minutes each way, and the crew has had to navigate those delays. NASA's planners want to know how such delays affect daily routines, medical care, and how much autonomy a crew needs when the answer cannot arrive in time. Some of the data, according to NASA, could show how limited food and exercise systems would affect the ability to achieve objectives such as spacewalks on the Martian surface.

For NASA, what matters is what comes next. Science teams are preparing to process the health and performance data gathered during the year. The crew will leave the habitat on Saturday, Oct. 31, to see their families in person, then take part in two weeks of evaluations and debriefs with NASA scientists. Those results, the agency says, will help it understand what it takes for crews to stay healthy, productive and connected on long missions far from Earth. Michael Stenger, chief scientist of NASA's Human Research Program, said the knowledge gained would be carried to "Moon Base and beyond."
The benefit is for the next generation of crews, and it arrives in stages. The debriefs begin after the crew leaves on Oct. 31; the analysis of the data will take longer, and the source does not say when the findings will be published or applied to a specific mission.
