Robot sensor uses electric fields to potentially identify objects without touching them

A robot sensor could help detect an object before its gripper reaches it. Chinese researchers have developed a sensor that detects nearby objects without physical contact by watching how they disturb a weak electric field, an approach inspired by electric eels. Zhang Weiqiang, a professor at Xidian University, says the aim is to distinguish a target's material and surface condition before contact.

The sensor's core is a charged fluoropolymer surface. It holds its charge for long periods, creating a predictable electric field when nothing is nearby. As an object approaches, the field changes shape. The sensor reads that distortion and, according to the team, can infer electrical conductivity, dielectric properties, geometric shape and proximity.

The mechanism could give robots another way to interpret difficult surroundings. Metal should alter the field strongly because it is highly conductive. Plastic, glass and wood conduct less well but can still become polarized. The geometry of the disturbance also changes with the object's form and distance: a larger, flatter object affects the field differently from a small sphere.

And so what, concretely? A robot handling fragile parts could receive an early warning without making contact. A machine working in darkness, smoke or dust could gain a sensing channel when cameras are unreliable. Transparent glass, which can be awkward for optical systems, could remain detectable because its electrical properties still influence the field. The same principle could also support prosthetics and manufacturing robots.

The technology is not yet a settled replacement for vision or touch. The sensor's accuracy, maximum detection range and sensitivity to humidity and temperature are still unclear. Those missing measurements will determine whether this eel-inspired idea stays a promising research device or becomes a dependable tool on a factory floor.
