Xiaomi HyperOS 4 puts AI into the system, from memory to cross-device execution

In ifanr’s testing of the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, AI is no longer hiding inside a chat window. Swipe up with three fingers, and the current page is saved to XiaoAI Memory; users can then simply describe what they want to find, and Super XiaoAI retrieves it. HyperOS 4 thus becomes Xiaomi’s first AIOS—not by adding an assistant to the phone, but by allowing AI to access the system’s memory, input and app capabilities.

The changes begin with the appearance, but do not stop there. The lock screen, Control Center and folders now have a glass-like finish, notifications stack in layers, and folders and widgets can have their layouts adjusted. The system has also optimized load calculation, memory preloading and app runtime. Testers said everyday stuttering was noticeably reduced and battery life was much better than before. The interface remains restrained, while AI features are distributed across memory, apps and interaction.

What it can do has already moved beyond “answering questions.” The new Notes app supports real-time recording, speaker identification, document generation and meeting minutes; Recorder supports live captions and AI summaries; Super XiaoAI Input can convert speech to text in real time, then organize, edit and translate it. Scheduled tasks can also check email and refresh calendars. In testing, the AI could understand an instruction such as “I’ll be home in an hour and want to watch a movie,” then coordinate the air conditioner, curtains, ambient lights and television.

But the weaknesses of system-level AI are also easier to expose. Notes and Recorder both use MiMo-V2.5 under the hood, yet their data is not fully connected. XiaoAI Memory currently mainly handles recording and answering questions; after seeing a meal pickup receipt, for example, it still cannot directly extract calories or record the expense. Code Number Island is expected to arrive through an OTA update in late August, while Inspiration Ball has not yet launched. Expert mode consumes points when executing tasks, with users receiving 1,000 points free each month. Xiaomi also offers subscription plans ranging from 29 yuan/month to 149 yuan/month.

So what has concretely changed? For Xiaomi users, context is beginning to flow between phones, computers and home devices: information recorded on a phone can be continued on a computer; repetitive operations can be handed to AI; and meeting recordings can be turned directly into editable documents. Xiaomi houses its foundation model, operating system and “Human × Car × Home” ecosystem within the same company, giving AI an opportunity to reach system-level data and permissions. But it also means that when the model makes a mistake, the impact can expand from a single irrelevant answer to memory and task execution. Lei Jun has said that Xiaomi will invest 60 billion yuan in dedicated AI funding over the next three years. HyperOS 4 has already demonstrated this direction; the next test is whether the model can reliably drive the system over the long term.
