Bedrock deploys operator-free excavators on live U.S. sites

An excavator is already working without anyone in its cab on active construction sites in Texas and Nevada. Bedrock Robotics has deployed fully autonomous, retrofitted heavy excavators on projects including a Nevada water treatment facility and major Texas earthwork operations, bringing operator-free machines out of headquarters testing and onto live infrastructure work.

For now, the robots are doing the first, roughest stages of a site: clearing earth, cut-and-fill operations and preparation for foundations. One Texas civil sitework project with Zachry Construction covers 1.2 million cubic yards; other deployments involve Sundt Construction and Champion Site Prep. The system monitors what the excavator is doing, checks whether it is making progress and can call home if it gets stuck.

The safety problem is as concrete as the machine. Water trucks and other people move around the excavators, so Bedrock says it tracks the equipment’s sensors, incoming signals and mechanical health. A person remains in the loop to handle exceptions, even though no operator is seated in the cab. The company is currently using new machines outfitted and tested at its San Francisco headquarters; retrofits for partner equipment are expected by the end of the year.

So what changes in practice? Contractors can assign autonomous excavators to repetitive early earthmoving while keeping human oversight for situations the system cannot resolve. That could help address a workforce shortage in a sector where analysts estimate more than 40% of workers will retire within five years. The current capability covers a defined slice of construction, not an entire job site.

Bedrock’s next step is broader deployment and more precise tasks. Its longer-term roadmap calls for clusters in which an excavator, bulldozer, truck and grader work together. The company has raised $350 million in venture capital, but coordinated fleets remain a future objective rather than a capability described as already operating on these projects.
