Huawei unveils charger promising 125 miles in five minutes

A car arrives nearly empty, plugs in, and Huawei says it can leave with up to 125 miles of range after five minutes. The company presented that liquid-cooled charging platform at the Power2Drive event during the Smarter E exhibition in Munich, putting the race to reduce charging stops alongside a less visible constraint: the electricity connection available at the site.

The platform pairs high-power chargers with an internal battery energy storage system connected directly to a direct-current bus. Huawei says removing a power-conversion stage raises storage efficiency to 92.1 percent. During peak charging, the site draws on its own battery rather than sending unwanted energy back into the external grid, allowing operation with a 50-kilowatt grid connection.

That changes the timetable for operators in regions with older power infrastructure. Huawei says construction can fall from several months to a few weeks because sites do not need to apply for grid-capacity expansion permits. The complete system supports up to 720 kilowatts across an operating voltage range of 150 to 1,000 volts, while its main dispensers provide up to 800 amperes and boost dispensers up to 600 amperes.

Heat is managed through an enclosed liquid-cooling system covering the power units, dispensers, and cables. Huawei says the design keeps wet dust and salt fog away from sensitive electronics, lowers maintenance needs, limits operating noise to below 55 decibels, and gives the hardware a service life of ten years. An automated power-sharing matrix distributes electricity among plugged-in vehicles, with Huawei reporting 96 percent overall operational efficiency. The hardware has obtained prime-level safety certification from TÜV.

So what does it change, concretely? For charging operators, the promise is not only a shorter stop for drivers but a smaller electrical connection and potentially a faster build in constrained areas. The platform was unveiled, and Huawei presents these figures as promises. Huawei’s separate megawatt-level charger in China is due to undergo field testing before reaching European markets, while Hongqi has reported a laboratory prototype battery charging from 10% to 70% in three minutes and 41 seconds.
