ESPHome’s US$40 kit simplifies local smart-home builds

A button clicks, the RGB lights flare, and the ESPHome Starter Kit connects to a Windows desktop without a fight. That small success is the point of ESPHome’s first official hardware product: a US$40 kit meant to take a beginner from blinking lights to a working local smart-home device.

ESPHome lets small, inexpensive microcontrollers become temperature sensors, buttons, lights, displays, presence detectors and many other devices. It is closely associated with Home Assistant, a smart-home platform where ESPHome devices can operate as native parts of an entirely local setup. Until now, getting started meant assembling boards, jumper wires, breadboards and pin diagrams, then dealing with YAML configuration. The kit packages that first step with an ESP32-C6 controller, a button, temperature and humidity sensing, RGB lights, a buzzer and a separate motion sensor.

The hardware arrives as a manufactured PCB panel. Users snap the individual boards out and connect them with ribbon cables, with no soldering and little chance of plugging a component into the wrong pin. The tutorial then builds the software in the same way: add a module and a new configuration block appears. Beginners can see the code grow without having to understand every line of YAML immediately.

The setup’s usefulness becomes clearer outside the prescribed exercises. Howard Armitage of New Atlas combined the kit with a camera module, Frigate — a local artificial-intelligence system — and Home Assistant to watch a dog door. The ESP captured and streamed the video to Frigate, which handled visual detection; Home Assistant collected the events, counted the dog’s trips outside and showed them on a dashboard. A pulsing light on the kit provided a local notification in the office.

So what changes in practice? For a newcomer, the kit removes several early obstacles at once: no soldering, fewer wiring decisions and a tutorial that does not begin with a wall of configuration. It also leaves room to grow beyond the examples. But the dog-monitoring setup depended on a separate camera, Frigate and Home Assistant, so the US$40 box is a starting point for local automation, not a complete smart home in itself.
