From above, a shopping mall roof in Johannesburg now carries a piece of Africa’s solar story that national spreadsheets often miss. Satellite imagery found rooftop solar on 76% of 209 malls examined in Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni, according to DataDesk and The Outlier.

These are not announced utility projects. They are customer-side installations: power infrastructure paid for and placed on the premises of a business. Malls are where that market would be expected to appear early, with large roofs, strong daytime electricity demand, owners able to finance equipment and direct exposure to unreliable or expensive grid power.

The aerial evidence helps explain a gap in the numbers. Africa officially added about 4.5 GW of solar in 2025, while it imported about 18.2 GW of solar modules. Those figures cannot simply be swapped: panels may still be sitting in ports or warehouses. But by the first half of 2026, another 12.53 GW of finished Chinese modules had been shipped to African markets, leaving more hardware to account for than official capacity statistics record.

The pattern does not yet show a repeat of Pakistan’s rooftop boom across residential and commercial neighborhoods. So far, African evidence appears more concentrated in commercial, industrial and institutional uses. Low Chinese module prices, cheaper batteries, expensive diesel and unreliable grids give mines, malls, factories, telecom operators, warehouses, farms and households reasons to build their own electricity infrastructure.

These customer-side additions have consequences even if the total operating capacity remains uncertain. More solar and batteries at large commercial and industrial sites can change grid demand, diesel consumption, distribution-company revenues, power-quality requirements and industrial competitiveness. Satellite images still miss small homes, rural systems, telecom installations, pumps, clinics and mini-grids; a visible panel also does not prove that its inverter, battery and electrical system are operating. Imported watts therefore remain a clue, not a final count of installed watts.
