Acer announces 799g Swift Blade 14 laptop

On paper, the Swift Blade 14 makes its case with one hard-to-miss number: 1.76 pounds / 799g. Acer’s announced productivity laptop measures as little as 0.51 inches / 12.95mm thin—around 1.7mm thicker than Apple’s svelte 13-inch MacBook Air, but nearly a pound lighter.

The explanation is partly in the material. Acer uses carbon fiber in the laptop’s top lid and bottom plate, helping account for a weight that sits well below the MacBook Air comparison drawn by The Verge. The result is a machine designed to compete on portability rather than simply copy Apple’s thinness.

The internal hardware sets a different tone. The Swift Blade will come with Intel Wildcat Lake processors ranging from the five-core Core 3 304 to the six-core Intel Core 7 350. Whichever processor is selected, Acer will include 12GB of RAM.

That configuration comes with a clear performance caveat. The Verge’s reviewer, Antonio G. Di Benedetto, writes that the Acer is not likely to go toe-to-toe with the MacBook Air’s M5 chip in raw performance.

In practical terms, the announced laptop gives buyers a choice between carrying less and chasing maximum performance. For someone who prefers a computer that is about as light as they come, Acer’s Swift Blade 14 could make a compelling case; The Verge does not expect the Swift Blade 14 to match Apple’s M5 in raw performance.
