Apple Intelligence enters China beta testing this October

Tim Cook, speaking in an interview in Shanghai on October 15, gave Chinese iPhone owners a date they did not have before: late October, when a beta version of Apple Intelligence, the company's suite of AI tools, opens to testers in mainland China. A beta is a test version released before the final product. Cook said the initial features and the Qwen models behind them have received regulatory approval, which is the step that had held the launch back.
The first batch is live translation, writing tools and Clean Up, the photo-editing tool. Bloomberg's earlier list also named notification summaries and Genmoji, the AI-generated custom emoji, which Cook's list does not mention. The redesigned Siri AI assistant is absent from this batch, and Bloomberg says Image Playground, Apple's image-generation tool, is excluded from the December rollout too.
The AI engine comes partly from Alibaba. Qwen, Alibaba's model, will provide text and image understanding and content generation across iOS, iPadOS, macOS and visionOS, so users can reach those functions without moving between apps. According to ifanr, Apple and Alibaba will also jointly train and refine a model for the Chinese market, tuned to local needs and services, which takes the partnership beyond integration into the training layer. Bloomberg adds that Apple is working with Baidu on search and Siri-related functions.
For owners of recent iPhones, the change comes in two steps. The beta is due in late October, and Bloomberg reports a public release in December, although Apple has not confirmed that date. The permits granted on September 29 cover those recent models.
Several points remain open. Cook confirmed the beta timing, not the December launch, and ifanr notes it is still unclear how the full partnership maps onto the features opening this month. No date has been given for the jointly trained China model, nor for the Siri AI assistant, which Apple has yet to announce for Chinese devices.
