Astranis unveils Perceptor to monitor and maneuver in GEO
A new satellite vehicle based on a platform already flying communications missions in GEO is getting a second job: watching the neighborhood and moving through it. Astranis has unveiled Perceptor, an SDA and maneuverability platform that will be built as a new vehicle on its MicroGEO spacecraft and designed for strategically important higher orbits, including GEO.
The new system adds hardware that the communications satellite does not carry. A suite of sensors will help determine what adversary spacecraft can do and provide details about anomalies on allied satellites. Propulsion hardware will allow Perceptor to maneuver throughout GEO more than a dozen times in one mission.
The platform is also designed to operate with other spacecraft as part of a constellation. That matters because Astranis is not presenting Perceptor as a one-off satellite with a single watch point, but as a system intended to work alongside other spacecraft while monitoring activity and responding to emerging threats.
The practical advantage is the starting point. MicroGEO has been flying communications missions in GEO since 2023, giving the underlying spacecraft space heritage before Perceptor’s additional sensors and propulsion are added. Astranis says the satellites can be built on its existing space production line, which it expects will let the company ramp up and scale the program quickly if needed.
So what, concretely? Perceptor gives Astranis a way to apply an in-orbit satellite platform to security missions without starting from an untested spacecraft design. The company’s CEO, John Gedmark, said Astranis found that the means to detect and respond to threats around higher-orbit infrastructure were lacking. Perceptor is the proposed response; its actual performance will depend on the system being built and operated in orbit.
