Ather launches Konarc electric scooter from INR99,999 in India

On the top-end Konarc Z, a rider can approach with the key fob in a pocket, press a button at the rear and have the seat open while both hands are full. Ather Energy, based in Bengaluru, has launched the electric scooter in India as its most affordable model, with the base version priced at INR99,999.

The entry model uses a swingarm-mounted motor producing 5.4 hp and 16 Nm of torque, with a top speed of 70 km/h. Its 2.1-kWh battery offers an effective range of 80 km, and the onboard charger takes it from 0%-80% in 4 hours from a wall outlet. Ather built the Konarc on its new EL platform for families and cost-conscious commuters, describing the setup as suited to city travel in high-traffic areas.

The top-end model gets a 7-inch touchscreen with Google Maps-based navigation, live traffic information and voice commands. A companion app plans routes around the remaining range and charging-station availability. The screen can also show cricket scores in real time, a small feature aimed at riders who would otherwise keep checking their phones.

The Konarc Z’s proximity-sensing key unlocks the scooter when it is nearby, but the handlebar mechanically locks when the rider walks away and the scooter will only unlock for riding when the key is on the seated rider. Under-seat storage measures 31 liters, enough for two half-face helmets, and the seat can open automatically from a rear button. Airwalk adds just enough power to move the scooter alongside a walking rider, forwards or backwards, in cramped parking spaces. The key can even be tapped against a specific point on the scooter to recharge it enough for an emergency unlock.

In practice, the change is a shorter chain of small tasks for Indian families and commuters: approach, unlock, park, open the storage and recover access if a key is lost. Basic Konarc versions are available to pre-order in India, with deliveries starting this month; the fully equipped Konarc Z will come later. Its price has not been announced and will be above $1,530, the price of the 3.5-kWh variant. Ather says the EL platform is designed to withstand bad roads and simplify maintenance.
