10,800 US schools now use solar power

In Durango, Colorado, Mountain Middle School is part of a national shift that now reaches more than 10,800 US K-12 schools. Generation180’s latest Brighter Future report says those schools serve more than 7 million students1 in 7 US students — with solar power. The data covers installations through April 2026.

The change is visible in the totals. The number of solar-powered schools has nearly doubled from 5,450 in 2016, while their combined capacity has more than tripled to over 2.4 gigawatts. Generation180 says that output is enough to cover the annual electricity use of more than 450,000 homes, roughly every household in Austin, Texas. California leads with 2,921 solar-powered schools, followed by New Jersey, New York, Illinois and Arizona.

For school districts, the attraction is not only cleaner electricity. Roanoke City Public Schools in Virginia is installing nearly 9.4 megawatts of solar across 29 sites and estimates that solar alone will save $46.5 million in energy costs over 35 years. Generation180 says districts are using solar to reduce costs, improve facilities and prepare students for the future economy.

Storage is the missing layer. Only 155 schools have installed battery systems since 2016: 94 paired with solar and 61 standalone. California accounts for 109 of those systems, about 70% of the national total. A battery can store surplus solar power for later, cut expensive demand peaks and keep critical equipment operating during a grid outage.

So what changes in practice? A school with solar and storage can potentially do more than lower its own electricity bill: it can keep the lights on as a community shelter when the grid fails. About one-third of US public K-12 schools are FEMA-designated emergency shelters. Federal tax policy provides context: storage remains eligible for the Clean Electricity Investment Credit, including through elective pay for public schools, even as the deadline for some new solar projects tightens. The opportunity is clear, but the reported figures measure installations, not independent tests of how each system performs during an outage.
