Bluesky: Hide your own posts from Discover feed

A setting in Bluesky is intended to prevent a casual post from suddenly reaching a much larger audience. The new option asks apps to hide a user's own posts from algorithmic recommendations. On Bluesky and in the official app, this removes them from the Discover feed — the section where users can discover new accounts.

The mechanism is deliberately limited. The setting applies to all of a user's own posts, not individual posts. And it does not remove the content from every feed: it can still appear in other feeds. Bluesky thus gives users more control over their audience, but does not promise complete shielding.

The feature addresses the problem of “context collapse.” People often write on social networks for a specific audience, while platforms recommend their posts to additional groups. Without the original context, those groups may misunderstand a post; additional reactions can further drive its distribution.

Specifically: Users who want to write on Bluesky only for their own followers can prevent their posts from appearing in the algorithmic Discover feed. This is not a guarantee of a limited audience. Private accounts still do not exist on Bluesky, and other apps or websites in the Atmosphere network connected through the AT Protocol can ignore the setting.
