Two-year trial finds glasses cut childhood myopia progression by more than 70%
A child squints at the whiteboard. The prescription changes again. In a two-year randomized clinical trial across nine U.S. sites, researchers tested glasses designed not only to correct blurry distance vision but also to slow the eye’s growth in 159 children aged 6 to 12.
The lenses, called highly aspherical lenslet (HAL) glasses, pair a normal single-vision zone with a myopia-control zone made of 11 contiguous HAL rings. Children wearing them saw their myopia worsen by 0.25 units, compared with 0.90 units among children using standard single-vision lenses. The researchers report a reduction in progression of more than 70%.
The design targets the structure behind the prescription. Nearsightedness worsens when the eyeball grows or stretches too far from front to back, so the researchers measured eye length with a painless laser tool during regular checkups. Average growth reached 0.21 mm with HAL glasses, versus 0.45 mm with standard lenses—a reduction of 53%.
The strongest result appeared in the youngest participants. Among children aged 6 to 8, HAL lenses slowed prescription changes by 87%. The children could see as sharply and clearly through the specialized lenses as through regular glasses, and the researchers described them as safe and comfortable during the trial.
So what changes in practice? For U.S. children with myopia, families may have a spectacle-based option that does more than correct the current blur: it may slow the progression that begins in childhood. The finding matters because more severe myopia is associated with greater concern about pathologic myopia and vision loss later in life. But these results describe two years of follow-up. Longer-term studies are still needed to establish whether the effect persists and whether it reduces adult eye disease risk.
