Hypershell ships a 1.8-kilogram consumer exoskeleton

A 1.8-kilogram frame sits around the wearer’s hips, held in place by straps and clips rather than a futuristic full-body harness. That is the Ultra S, Hypershell’s top consumer mechanical exoskeleton, which the Chinese startup shipped this spring at 13,999 yuan. The company also shipped the Pro S at 6,999 yuan and the Max S at 9,999 yuan.

The Ultra S is built for outdoor use. Titanium alloy and woven carbon fiber replace stainless steel and PPA polymer, while a 1,000W motor can deadlift 40 kilograms in a demonstration. Its rated battery range is 30 kilometers on one charge, and two terrain modes address dunes and snow. The less expensive Pro S uses an 800W motor and has a 17.5-kilometer range.

The more consequential change is software. Hypershell’s companion app uses end-to-end AI motion recognition — a low-latency model that reads sensor data to infer what the wearer is doing — and changes motor assistance in real time. Walking uses about 10 percent of the available motor power; the system can increase support for climbing or running, or provide downhill knee-load relief, without the wearer pressing a button.

That adaptation matters because a motor alone does not know when to help. Hypershell lets users configure the response curve in the app, including dialing down a lift that feels too aggressive. Comfort remains the binding constraint, however: the mount is still a basic strap-and-clip system, more like a weightlifting belt than a medical harness.

So what changes in practice? Hikers and outdoor enthusiasts in China can now buy a consumer exoskeleton starting at less than 7,000 yuan, while serious outdoor users can choose the Ultra S. The products have reached retail, but the decisive evidence is still ahead: whether the promised assistance and comfort hold up through a season of real-world use.
