China’s S4000 prototype completes test at 13,123 ft
An airship the size of a football field rose above a base in Northwest China, held its position, generated electricity and returned under controlled recovery. The S4000 airborne wind energy system completed that full flight test cycle at a maximum operating altitude of 4,000 meters (13,123 ft)—twice the ceiling of the S2000 model it replaces.
That extra altitude is the point. The developers say the system reaches stronger, steadier winds than ground-based turbines can, with enough potential to power most regions across China. The report says all performance indicators met required standards under complex, high-altitude conditions, while describing the milestone as a move from prototype testing toward real-world deployment.
The mechanism is straightforward to picture. Helium buoyancy lifts the wind turbine assembly; a tether anchors it and carries the generated electricity down to the ground. Linyi Yunchuan Energy Technology developed the S4000 with Tsinghua University’s electrical engineering department and the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Aerospace Information Innovation. The company says the modular platform can be disassembled and relocated within 24 hours, a feature aimed at remote deserts, plateaus and islands.
The project has advanced through five models since the S500 reached 500 meters and generated 50 kilowatts in 2024. The S2000 later made the grid-connected test that drew attention after a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson shared footage of its floating, UFO-like shape. The S4000 can be integrated directly with mainstream power grids and carries a design service life of up to 20 years.
So what changes in practical terms? A wind system that can move by air could bring generation to places where building conventional turbines and related infrastructure is difficult. The immediate evidence is still a flight test, not a deployed fleet: the company is targeting the S6000 for testing in the third quarter of 2026, with a goal of flying beyond 6,000 meters.
