NASA’s Roman telescope begins three-month journey to L2
1 hour and 23 minutes after launch, Roman began unfolding from the compact configuration that let it fit inside the rocket’s fairing. Its solar panels and sunshade deployed, supplying power and protecting the rest of the observatory as the spacecraft started its three-month journey toward the Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 2, or L2.
Commissioning is taking place during that journey. NASA says scientists and engineers are switching systems on, adjusting and calibrating them, and checking whether Roman performs as expected before science operations. The antenna is scheduled to extend next, followed by a visor-like aperture cover that will permanently reveal and shade the primary mirror.
L2 is a location where the gravity of the Sun and Earth, combined with an object’s motion around the Sun, allows Roman to remain aligned with Earth while using relatively little fuel. NASA says the orbit should offer stable optical performance and an unobstructed view of a wide part of the sky, while reducing the influence of heat from Earth, the Sun, and the Moon on infrared observations.
And so what, concretely? Roman is not collecting science data yet; it is still being tested on the way to its operating orbit. If commissioning proceeds as expected, the spacecraft will have undergone these checks and calibrations before science operations begin at L2. NASA cautions that the schedule can change as the team works through those assessments.
