New Jersey: facility opens with 450-ton annual CO2 removal capacity
Along Milltown Road in Bridgewater, New Jersey, Project Brighton has begun operations. Avnos says the facility can remove 450 tons of CO2 each year and produce about 475,000 gallons of clean water, making it the company’s largest operating deployment to date.
The site sits beside Avnos’s Technology Development Center, bringing research, testing and product development onto one campus. Its Hybrid Direct Air Capture, or HDAC, process is meant to pull CO2 already present in the atmosphere while producing water at the same time. Unlike some direct air capture technologies that require significant external heat or water inputs, Avnos says HDAC works without external heat.
Brighton’s immediate job is to generate real-world operating data. Avnos will use the site to test captured CO2 as a feedstock—an input material—for sustainable aviation fuel; captured gas can also be permanently stored or used in synthetic fuels. The project therefore links atmospheric carbon removal to potential fuel production without claiming that commercial aviation fuel is already being made there.
The concrete consequence is an operating platform for Avnos now: the company can gather performance data, test its combined water-and-carbon output under real-world conditions and prepare larger deployments. Avnos says the approach is intended for applications including data centers, geologic carbon storage and low-carbon fuel production.
With Brighton operational, Avnos is advancing Project Cedar, supported by up to $17 million in project financing. Cedar is expected to use four HDAC modules designed around faster construction, greater scalability and more repeatable deployment. Brighton is operating; Cedar remains in development, so the 450-ton figure is a stated capacity while the site is being used to build the data needed for commercial-scale systems.
