Coating cuts dengue cases 45% more in Colombian trial

In Cúcuta, Colombia, the most important mosquito breeding sites can be large washing tanks beside homes. Researchers from the University of Freiburg coated those containers once, then followed dengue transmission for a year. In the treated neighborhoods, dengue cases fell 45% more than in comparable control areas.

The cluster-randomised trial covered 20 urban areas, each comprising around 1,600 to 2,000 households. One year after treatment, coated areas recorded 337 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, against 529 cases per 100,000 in control areas. Homes containing mosquito larvae or pupae also became significantly less common.

The coating works in two stages. One active ingredient kills adult Aedes aegypti mosquitoes—the yellow fever mosquito—and inhibits their egg-laying. A second prevents larvae and pupae from developing. Microcapsules release both ingredients slowly, keeping the surface active for more than 12 months. The direct cost was around US$2 per year per tank, and earlier safety studies found no health risk from water in treated containers.

The result matters because dengue affects an estimated 100 million to 400 million people every year, while climate change, urbanisation and the spread of the Asian tiger mosquito are raising the risk of local outbreaks in Europe. Germany already uses the biological agent Bti against mosquito larvae in water containers, but it must be reapplied every two weeks. A longer-lasting coating could reduce that burden for households and local authorities.

So what, concretely? A single treatment could protect homes by targeting the places where mosquitoes reproduce, rather than relying only on repeated interventions against adult insects. But Germany is not yet a deployment case: its mosquito species, climate, container types and control programs differ, and the Colombian findings cannot be applied directly. The Freiburg team says a European do-it-yourself solution is conceivable once a product has been approved.
