Schizophrenia disrupts brain balance and slows recovery

At Georgia State University's downtown Atlanta campus, Sir-Lord Wiafe and colleagues looked beyond whether brain regions rise and fall together. Their finding: in people with schizophrenia, brain networks showed larger signal-strength imbalances, slipped back into those states more often and took longer to recover.

The team began with a longstanding challenge in brain-imaging research. Different systems operate on different internal clocks, from split-second changes to shifts over several seconds. By aligning those timescales first, the researchers could compare how strongly networks engaged relative to one another, rather than confusing timing with strength.

The study used resting-state scans from 160 healthy adults and 151 people with schizophrenia. Its reliability was evaluated in 827 participants. The scans came from the Human Connectome Project, which maps the human brain to advance research into behavior and neurological disorders.

The slower recovery did not reflect more randomness: the researchers found no meaningful difference in the level of randomness between the two groups. Instead, the result points to a difficulty in steering brain activity back toward balanced signal strength after a disruption. Patterns involving the cerebellum were associated with hallucinations and delusions; imbalances in cognitive-control and default-mode networks were linked to reduced motivation and emotional expression.

So what changes in practice? Not treatment yet. The framework gives researchers a dynamic measure of how brain coordination breaks down and recovers, rather than a single snapshot of which networks look abnormal. That measure was related to symptoms and cognitive performance and could eventually help study brain-stimulation treatments, but more research is needed before it can guide care.
