Artemis II sent nearly half a terabyte by laser at up to 260 Mbps

A crescent Earth slipped behind the Moon, a total solar eclipse unfolded for nearly an hour, and tiny meteoroids flashed against the lunar surface. During Artemis II in April, those scenes reached viewers through a new kind of space link: an infrared laser system that sent nearly half a terabyte of data back to Earth.

The system is called O2O, short for the Orion Artemis II Optical Communications System. MIT Lincoln Laboratory developed it with NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center for the Orion spacecraft. Instead of using radio-frequency signals, O2O sends data with infrared laser light, which can transmit 10 to 100 times more data per second than radio waves.

That difference changed what the mission could show. O2O downlinked data at up to 260 megabits per second, delivering footage described by MIT Technology Review as crystal clear and comparable in speed to home internet connections. Earlier US missions to the Moon relied on radio systems that produced grainy, low-quality images and video.

For astronauts, the practical gain is more than a sharper livestream. A high-bandwidth connection can move large volumes of imagery from deep space, giving people on Earth access to lunar basins and craters on the far side, as well as rapidly changing events such as an eclipse or an impact flash. The mission also put a named engineering team behind that connection: Farzana Khatri, a senior staff member in Lincoln Laboratory’s Optical and Quantum Communications Group, led the systems work.

O2O was tested on a crewed mission, rather than showing that laser links have replaced radio communications throughout human spaceflight. Khatri said the goal was to show the system’s operational utility for a crewed mission and extend the high-bandwidth connections familiar on Earth into deep space. Artemis II therefore provided an in-flight demonstration, while leaving broader, routine use for future missions.
